Report

Stourbridge progressed into the next round of the F A Cup with a single goal victory over Evesham United thanks to a superb strike by Ryan Rowe. The Glassboys shaded the first half by playing the more attractive football. After the break they sat back on their lead and only occasionally broke out of defence but still looked the brighter side.

Evesham, on the other hand, were rather one dimensional with their solitary tactic being a 70 yard hoof down the field by goalkeeper Nathan Vaughan and then to look for any flick ons their front line could achieve. Stour’s back line dealt with this admirably.

The only goal of the game came on 20 minutes, and what a superb effort it was. James Dyson played the ball forward and as the home back line failed to cut it out, Ryan Rowe picked up the ball 45 yards out, advanced down the inside left channel and let fly from 25 yards. The ball screamed along the deck into the far corner.

On 25 minutes, Sam Rock limped off to be replaced by Aaron Drake. I mention this only because on 59 minutes Drake was, himself, withdrawn (not injured) and replaced by Linden Dovey.

Stourbridge were already sitting back on their lead and were forced to do this even more when, on 61 minutes, Ryan Mahon received a straight red card for raising his hands in a heated exchange with Evesham’s midfielder Simon Fitter.

The home side momentarily thought they had equalised when another long ball upfield was flicked on and the Robins’ captain, Steve Lutz, fired home but from a clearly off side position.

The closest the home team came to getting on level terms was in the 80th minute when Fitter advanced from midfield and let fly from 25 yards. His shot smashed against the top of the crossbar and flew to safety.

The Glassboys duly held onto their lead as the referee played 4 additional minutes.

Although this wad a good all round performance, special mention should be made of Todd Henderson, our recent signing in goal for a very assured display.
