Report

Stourbridge and Hucknall Town must try again after drawing a blank at Amblecote in this FA Cup Third Qualifying Round Tie. Despite being goalless, this was not a bad game, with both sides playing positively and providing the watching fans with plenty of entertainment.

Stour had the better of the first half and carved out four good chances, but could take none of them.

After only 2 minutes, Sean Evans found Linden Dovey in the area with a neat pass but the Stour frontman could only drag his effort wide of the goal from 16 yards.

On 16 minutes, a Drew Canavan right wing corner was met by Nathan Bennett, who got ahead of his marker, but the Glassboys’ centre half’s powerful header flew wide. Canavan, himself, then had Stourbridge’s best chance when sent through on 38 minutes only to see his effort, from only 8 yards, lack power and direction, allowing Daniel Haystead in the Hucknall goal to block the shot with his legs.

Finally, Canavan was again involved on 40 minutes when he threaded a pass through the visitor’s defence only to see Ryan Rowe have his effort blocked by Haystead at the expense of a corner.

Hucknall improved in the second period and the Glassboys found it more difficult to create the same quality of chances.

Dovey did force a fine save from Haystead on 53 minutes when his fierce angled drive from the right hand edge of the penalty area was superbly tipped over.

On 62 minutes, Laurie Wilson lifted a high ball into the Stourbridge area which dipped onto the top of the home crossbar. On 80 minutes, a surging run from Nathan Kelly, one of the Hucknall substitutes, ended with a drive into the side netting.

Two minutes before the Kelly effort, Stourbridge recorded a somewhat unusual statistic. For the second round in succession, they substituted a substitute! Sam Rock came on for Dovey on 67 minutes but was replaced only 11 minutes later by Aaron Drake. This time the change was due to an injury suffered by Rock.

With two minutes to go, the visitors were reduced to 10 men when centre half, Luke Shiels, received his second yellow card for a trip on Drew Canavan. The Glassboys could not force a win, despite their numerical superiority but they did come close when Ryan Mahon let fly from 20 yards only to see the very impressive Haystead tip the effort over the bar for a corner.

Stourbridge probably shaded the game “on points”, having created the better chances, and more of them, but Hucknall certainly contributed to a game that was better than the scoreline would suggest. In short, this was a game between two evenly matched teams.
