Report
From the Stourbridge website:
The Glassboys ground out a narrow 1 - 0 win courtesy of
a Ryan Rowe penalty to leapfrog over their opponents in
the league standings. Rowe had an early opportunity when
he nipped in to reach a ball ahead of visiting custodian
Chris Snoddy, but as he rounded the keeper, he ran a
little too wide and his attempted chip was saved by
Snoddy above his head. The visitors quickly responded,
however Scott Lye flashed his volley from just outside
the box well wide. A scrappy period of play saw a
looping shot from James Martin on 24 minutes comfortably
saved by Lewis Solly and a few minutes later a corner
from Martin was helped on by Alex Kite, but Lewis Powell
prodded the ball straight into Solly's arms before
the home side were dealt a blow on the half-hour mark as
skipper Sam Smith was stretchered off with a knee injury
forcing the Glassboys into a reshuffle with Jamie Oliver
moving into the centre of the defence. Six minutes
before the break however, Gary Hackett's men forged into
the lead. A strong run from Sean Evans unsettled the
Chippenham defence and after riding one challenge, Evans
was bundled over by Greg Tindle inside the right-hand
side of the penalty area to win a penalty which Rowe
despatched with aplomb.
Chippenham pushed the Glassboys back after the re-start
as they went in search of an equaliser. On 53 minutes
Ashley Williams won possession and found Powell whose
20-yard effort cleared the crossbar by inches and six
minutes later the visitors were somehow denied a goal
when Lye crossed from the left and the ball dropped to
the feet of Alan Griffin who looked set to stab home,
but Solly produced a superb point blank save to keep the
home side ahead. Stourbridge had offered little going
forward in the second period, but they almost extended
their advantage in the 65th minute as Drew Canavan sent
in a free-kick from the right and Nathan Bennett got in
a good header that drew a fine diving save from Snoddy
away to his right. The Glassboys continued to cling onto
their slender lead, although the visitors were left to
rue another missed opportunity nine minutes from time as
the ball fell to sub Danny Wring in space on the
left-hand side of the box, but he drove a low shot
straight at Solly and then after collecting the rebound,
Wring hung up a cross to the far post for Griffin, but
he was unable to direct his header on target and
Stourbridge held out to the final whistle to wrap up
their second home win in the space of five days.
